Background information

Mortality from COVID-19 in Swedish nursing homes has been widely discussed in the media in 2020. The discussion has, among other things, revolved around whether the type of nursing home, i.e. whether it is run by a municipality or privately, has had an effect on mortality from COVID-19. Based on this, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise has commissioned Sirona Health Solutions to analyze whether there are differences in excess mortality in Swedish nursing homes depending on whether the home is run by a municipality or privately

Implementation

Sirona Health Solutions has compared the mortality rate in spring 2020 with the corresponding period in 2017-2019 at regional and national level for nursing homes in municipal and private sector.

Outcome

The analysis shows that there were no statistically significant differences in excess mortality in private nursing homes compared to excess mortality in municipal nursing homes in the spring. A large spread in results on excess mortality among both municipal and private homes can be noted, which affects the possibility of a significant result. As there is no statistically significant difference between excess mortality in private and municipal care, the results indicate that the type of care is not an explanatory factor for excess mortality in COVID-19. The conclusion that excess mortality during COVID-19 depends on the type of care can therefore not be drawn statistically.
