Today we mark World Epilepsy Day, an important day to raise awareness and promote dialogue about epilepsy. Sirona, a leading healthcare and health economics research company, has conducted a survey of epilepsy care based on quantitative analysis and interviews with specialists, practice representatives and patients. Results from the survey are compiled in "Situation report of epilepsy care in Sweden - in-depth analysis of four regions".
Epilepsy care in Sweden faces several challenges in providing patients with the care they are entitled to. Sirona's mapping of epilepsy care shows that the care has challenges to follow both National Guidelines and Care Pathways for epilepsy. What does this mean in practice for patients? That they risk not receiving timely care and that the overall time to good treatment is long.
One of the major challenges facing epilepsy care is the interaction between primary care, specialized care and highly specialized care. In some cases, patients in need of specialized care remain in primary care, while patients who could be managed in primary care are currently managed in specialized care. This could mean that some patients are at risk of not achieving good seizure control and that side effects risk being overlooked.
