Background information

On May 29, 2019, the Regional Council of Region Kronoberg took a decision to build a new hospital in Växjö. By taking a holistic approach to how future care will be offered to the region's residents, the region intends to design the future care structure, based on deeper analysis of care needs at different levels.

Sirona was commissioned to produce a data-driven analysis of the future dimensioning of a new acute hospital, both with an unchanged care structure and productivity and with a redesigned care structure and improved productivity.

Implementation

Advanced forecasting models of future healthcare needs at the operational level for inpatient care, outpatient specialized care, day care and other support functions such as surgery and imaging and function were developed. The models were based on historical healthcare consumption trends and future population and demographic changes and extend to 2030, 2040 and 2050.

In order to translate future care needs into space requirements, in-depth analyses of current utilization and productivity were carried out, including the identification of productivity-enhancing measures. The work was carried out iteratively through ongoing coordination with the hospital's care operations.

Finally, external analysis and benchmarking against other hospitals internationally and nationally were also carried out to refine the recommendations.

Challenge

In complex analysis assignments such as this, data needs to be analyzed and reconciled with the business in several rounds to ensure that the data going into the models is correct. The results of the modeling also need to be anchored and discussed repeatedly. It is also essential to document manual adjustments to ensure good traceability.

Outcome

Sirona's work contributed to a solid basis for decision-making regarding future hospital dimensioning, where the need for premises for all units at the hospital was analyzed. Sirona also contributed to in-depth current analyses of each unit's care statistics with the identification of productivity improvements and changed working methods to better utilize future premises.
