Sirona has been commissioned by the auditors in the Southeastern healthcare region - Region Östergötland, Region Jönköping County and Region Kalmar County - to conduct an audit of the work with the healthcare region's cancer promises.
The review shows good examples and that positive development work is being carried out, but at the same time it is not considered possible to fully fulfill the promises made to the inhabitants of the health region in the foreseeable future. This is mainly due to persistent structural obstacles and bottlenecks.
The review has analyzed cancer care in the Southeastern Healthcare Region from several perspectives, including accessibility, patient participation, cancer rehabilitation and palliative care. Several development areas are highlighted - including lack of access to well-informed and involved patients throughout the care chain, unequal access to palliative care depending on where the patient lives and shortcomings in access to cancer rehabilitation. In addition, analyses carried out show that lead times according to the standardized care pathways are exceeded for about half of the patients, and that for some cancer diagnoses it can take several months before treatment is initiated.
Despite the challenges, some positive elements are also noted, including the development of contact nurses to increase patient participation and well-functioning screening programs. It is also considered that there are well-functioning cooperation structures between the regions in the Southeastern healthcare region to drive the development of cancer care forward.
The current review is one of several projects that Sirona has carried out in cancer care. All assignments show several good examples - but at the same time it is clear that there are remaining challenges in cancer care in the country as a whole, where more evidence-based decision-making and development work is needed to ensure good care for all patients with cancer and their relatives.
